Boyne History and Profile

In 1947, people shook their heads in wonder when a Detroit Studebaker dealer moved north to start a ski resort. Everett Kircher was known throughout the skiing world as a visionary. And his company, Boyne Resorts completes that vision as the finest sport and leisure resorts in the world.

Boyne Resorts, consists of six major ski and summer resorts including Michigan's two premier summer and winter resorts, Boyne Highlands and Boyne Mountain; Big Sky, the year-round resort in Montana, founded by the late Chet Huntley in 1970; Brighton Ski Bowl in Big Cottonwood Canyon near Salt Lake City, Utah; Boyne South, a golf course in Naples, Florida; a scenic chairlift in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, near the Great Smokey Mountains National Park and new world-class Bay Harbor Golf Club and Inn at Bay Harbor near Petoskey, Michigan. New to the Boyne family are Crystal Mountain Resort near the border of Mt. Ranier National Park in Seattle, Washington; and Cypress Mountain in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

Boyne has had many firsts including the world's first triple chair installed in 1964 at Boyne Highlands, and the world's first four-person chair, installed in 1969 at Boyne Mountain. In 1990 Boyne installed Michigan's first high-speed detachable quad chairlift at Boyne Highlands. And in 1992, Boyne Mountain unveiled America's first 6-seat high-speed chairlift.

Kircher's ski innovation included pioneering snowmaking. He invented the Boyne Snowmaker, the first efficient snowmaker widely accepted as the standard for marginal temperature snowmaking. It combines small amounts of air and electricity with large quantities of water to provide a high efficiency snowmaking system with energy savings, and minimum noise level. He also pioneered the design of much of the snow grooming equipment and techniques in use today.

His unflagging interest in skiing technique resulted in bringing former Olympians Stein Erickson and Othmar Schneider to Boyne Mountain to head the ski school and to teach the "reverse shoulder" method to skiers visiting his resort. Because of the legacy left behind by Erickson and Schneider, an Austrian-American ski school has become a mainstay at Boyne Mountain, Boyne Highlands and Big Sky.

A desire to keep his employees on staff between ski seasons led Kircher into golf. A friend suggested that a golf course might attract summer visitors. That was all Kircher needed. Using his father’s ancient Ford farm tractor, he carved out a sporty nine-hole, par-three layout at the base of the Boyne lodge.

Boyne now owns seven 18-hole championship courses and three 9-hole courses in Michigan; an Arnold Palmer designed course at Big Sky, Montana and an 18-hole course at Boyne South in Naples, Florida. In 1998 all three nine-hole courses were completed and opened at Bay Harbor Golf Club on the shores of Lake Michigan near Petoskey.

Since 1947, Boyne Resorts has been steadily carving a niche in the sports and leisure world. Today, as the largest privately owned Ski and Golf Corporation in the country, Boyne takes pride in its accomplishments. With a business strategy of making capital improvements to bring more skiers and enhancing the areas, the Kircher family has created some of best ski & recreation areas located near major metropolitan areas in North America.

The expansions and improvements are numerous and constant for Boyne Resorts. This family owned company continues to build and improve four-season destinations to fit "a way of life" for the active families and friends who gather there. Offering the very best in golf, ski, tennis, biking, hiking and cross-country skiing together with luxurious accommodations, fine dining, cozy restaurants and lounges and exquisite spa facilities. All within reach of major metropolitan areas.

It was Everett Kircher's vision to create such destinations with the latest technology, genuine hospitality and a resort to satisfy every member of the family. Boyne Resorts has done just that with its state of the art facilities, family atmosphere and everything for the outdoor enthusiast.

Company Profile

From Michigan to Washington State, the Boyne Resorts collection features the very best in sport and leisure activities for every season and every person. In combination with the many amenities found at each resort, Boyne proves to have the finest and most complete resort facilities in the nation.

Boyne is the largest privately owned ski resort business in North America. The primary business focus is on the operation of day ski areas, located near major metropolitan areas with long term investments taking priority over short-term gains. This family business has been managed by the Kircher family since 1946 and continues to be managed with direct operational involvement by family members today. Boyne has enjoyed a spotless reputation inside the ski industry for fifty five years and promises to be a shining star in the future of resort management and development.

Founder, Everett Kircher recognized a need for the ski industry in northern Michigan and was determined to fulfill that need. With a passion for winter sports and the outdoors, he began Boyne Resorts. Bringing in the finest instructors from Austria and the latest technology in snow making, Kircher introduced the best ski resort in the mid-west.

Today, Boyne proudly hosts six major four season resorts across America. The natural beauty of each resort continues to draw sport and travel enthusiasts nationally and internationally. Whether visitors venture for the best in snow sports, golfing, biking, hiking and boating on the Great Lakes or for the gracious hospitality and impeccable service, they are sure to return to Boyne Resorts again and again.

It is with great pride this family owned company continues to serve each guest with the same high standards of hospitality and service set long ago with the first resort. The Kircher family and Boyne Resorts are confident the future of mountain recreation is upon us and pledge to be one step ahead in fulfilling the needs and expectations of every visitor.
