I want to work at Cypress this winter! How do I apply?
Download the Employment Application and submit it with your resume and cover letter to Human Resources at jobs@cypressmountain.com or fax 604 926 9441. If you are applying for multiple positions, please indicate your preferences on the application form by numbering your choices (1 being the 1st choice etc.) If you are applying with a partner, please submit applications separately.
How does the application process work?
All applications received pre season are held on file until our Department Head’s return in the fall and begin reviewing and contacting suitable candidates. All pre season applicants are encouraged to attend the annual job fair in October for an on the spot interview. How old do you have to be to work at Cypress Mountain?
The legal age to work in British Columbia is 15. Super-star candidates that are underage are able to work with parental/guardian consent.
I don’t have a work permit. Will Cypress sponsor me?
Unfortunately due to the high number of applicants and the guidelines outlined by the Canadian Government, we are not able to provide documentation including letters of offer for general international applications. We do have a limited number of sponsored visa positions for certified ski and snowboard instructors. For more information, please visit the International Applicant page.
Where can I apply for a work permit?
Visit our International Applicant page for details on work permits. All applicants are required to have a work permit prior to receiving a job offer. We prefer to hire our employees face to face, and preference will be given to those who attend the job fair.
If I don’t have a work permit, can I apply for a volunteer position?
All applicants are required to have a valid work permit at the time of application to be considered for a position.
Do I have to be able to ski or snowboard to work at Cypress?
Some positions do require ski or snowboard ability, but many other positions are available that don’t. FREE skiing and riding is just one of the perks and you may also participate in FREE group lessons in the Snow School. Click HERE...for other peak perks.
When will I start work?
Our winter season generally runs from early December through mid April, weather permitting. If you are offered a position, you will be contacted by your Supervisor advising the date of your first scheduled shift.
I’ve never worked on a ski hill, what training is provided?
All employees are required to complete an orientation prior to their first shift. We will provide an overview of what to expect, what we expect from our employees, and what you can expect from our management team. You will also complete customer service training, as well as training specific to your department. Your most important skill is a friendly attitude and willingness to provide a high level of customer service. We can train you on the rest!
Do you have staff housing/accommodation?
As we are located in a Provincial Park, we do not have any housing or staff accommodation available. We encourage applicants to research rental options prior to arrival. Suggested areas of residence would be North or West Vancouver, Downtown, The West End, Kitsilano, or Vancouver West. We suggest using craigslist.com, nsnews.com for housing options.
Can I take public transit to work?
We are not on a public transportation route. We offer discounted rates to staff on the Cypress shuttle, and have schedule accommodations for shift start and end times. Do you organize carpooling? Is there staff parking available?
Due to insurance constraints, we are not able to facilitate carpooling for staff. We encourage the use of staff notice boards and departmental ride shares or the use of the Carpool Forum to organize your ride. We do not have designated staff parking available, and encourage all staff to plan their commutes to allow for weather and high volume in order to make it to your scheduled shift on time.
How much will I be paid per hour?
Our pay rates are dependent on your experience and position you are hired for, and competitive within the industry. A general wage range is between $8.75 - $10 per hour for entry level roles and $11 - $16 for supervisory roles. Ski and Snowboard Instructors are paid between $12 - $19 per hour based on experience and certification level.
How many shifts will I work if I am a full time employee?
Full time employees work between 32 and 40 hours per week. The average shift length is 8 hours.
How many shifts will I work if I am a part time employee?
Part time employees work between 8 and 24 hours per week. The average shift length is 8 hours.
Am I guaranteed hours every week?
The Ski Industry is heavily weather dependent. We cannot guarantee full or part time hours each week. Your shift and shift length is dependent on weather conditions, snow conditions and ticket sales.
How and when do I get paid?
Seasonal employees are issued cheques bi weekly, and can be picked up from your Supervisor. It is important that you establish a bank account prior to working. We do not offer direct deposit.
Do I have to work at Christmas?
When in full winter operation, Cypress is open 7 days a week including holidays. Departments will give preference to applicants that are able to work over the Christmas period and available to work either Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Years Eve or New Years Day. If you have travel plans during this time, we ask that you advise us at your interview.
What do I wear to work?
All Cypress employees are issued a uniform prior to their first shift. Employees working outside are provided pants and a jacket. It is your responsibility to provide your own boots, gloves, toques/hats, scarves or any other weather appropriate clothing items. Indoor positions are provided with a vest. All staff are required to wear issued uniform pieces while on shift.
Do I get a ski pass?
All employees are issued a ski pass upon commencing employment with us. You must remain in good standing to use your pass, and should your employment term end before the season, your pass must be returned immediately.
When can I use my pass?
We encourage our staff to get out and enjoy the mountain as much as possible! You are encouraged to ski and snowboard on your days off or before/after your shift. It is your department manager’s discretion should you use your pass on scheduled breaks.
What other perks are available?
Cypress employees enjoy many perks other than FREE skiing! We offer discounts on food services, retail and rentals; as well as reciprocal pass benefits at Boyne Resorts and Western Canadian Resorts. We have staff events on and off mountain, and have multiple recognition programs to say thanks for doing a great job!
